We’re UHS students; we like music. We also like video games. Come see what happens when we put our minds, talents, and interests together. It’s not another bake sale! We aren’t selling you anything except a ticket to see the show. It’s also not just another concert or recital. Want to support your local youth? Support us! We’re fun! (This show is not officially affiliated with University High School. Resemblance to any UHS student, real or fictional, is purely coincidental. If this were an actual UHS production it would not be in the Rogue. This is ONLY a test… er… show.)

I took my high school age, daughter to this performance and it was entertaining. She got most the video game references. My favorites were the Pokemon songs, that was very cute. We both agree that we could love to hear you perform more songs with lyrics next time, in between the instrumentals. I hope you perform next year, and don’t be afraid in song choice to pander to your mostly over 20 audience.
Great show! Totally fun, and the kids are great performers. Good rhythm and intonation, and great multi-part vocal arrangements of theme songs from video games, cartoons, and movies. Being over the age of 20 I didn’t get all the references, but my song got them and thought it was hysterical. And any group that references Monty Python and the Holy Grail in a segue to a song is ok in my book.
Come see their last show on Saturday and help them raise money for their choir!
Better then cake!!
I enjoyed this show. It is my understanding that this show was written and performed by the students without guidance from UHS faculty or staff. To counter another post this was not video game sounds, the tunes the students are singing are the theme music from various games; they are not singing lyrics they are using their voices as musical instruments with multiple harmonies. I believe this is known as performance choir and I found it quite impressive. While I did not get most of the references, it was not required, the skill and talent displayed was enough to make the show worth seeing.
We loved this show and highly recommend it! I have a guest visiting from out of town. He loves video games (especially old school) and I love high school choir (I come from a musical family and my choir was the best place for me to find love, acceptance, and enjoyment). We were thrilled throughout the performance. It was very creative, very fun and funny, and really showed off the harmony! Fantastic job to the performers! I hope you know how much you are appreciated.
Great show, definitely worth every penny, lots of laughs and energy. A must see!
With great expectations I went to see the performance Not Another UHS Bake Sale by a group of young singers, who also happened to be students at the University High School located at the campus of Fresno State. My understanding from the title and the promotional info was that this was going to be a unique “A Cappella” show, performed by talented young singers, with no “ulterior motive” (i.e. no “please help us because we are high school kids in need of help” kind of thing – hence the name…Not Another UHS Bake Sale) but simply making a “professional debut”.
Well, I can summarize my feeling after the show (3/5/2011 at 4:00 p.m.) with two words: deception and disappointment.
Deception because of an entire show with just renditions of video games sounds. Please! I honestly thought that the reference to video games in the promotion was simply to say…we like soccer…or…we like hiking. I never thought that this was going to be an entire show on actual video game sounds (pardon my naiveté kids…I guess this goes to tell you that old people can still be naive). If you ask me, I would have used perhaps the “I am White and Nerdy” (which is not a video game sound) and their rendition of “Mortal Kombat” as comic relieve of a mostly songs repertoire. The other stuff was amusing at best, but mostly boring. So kids, if you had asked “come and help us with this bake-sale, which coincide with the Rogue Festival” I would have said “yes, why not” (you see, my son is an alumnus of UHS). However, you didn’t and therefore the deception.
Disappointment because these kids actually seem to have talent, but it was totally wasted in this repertoire! In the few vocal parts, buried in all the noise, there were brilliant moments of soprano-like voice and the bass sounds. Furthermore, they have lots of energy, enthusiasm and wittiness; with these elements (and the great voices) they seem to be able to put together an entertaining show. I definitely want to encourage the group to keep working…but please change the repertoire.
I certainly hope you kids take these words seriously. After all I think you were selling a product (or so I thought) and would imagine you would want to know what ALL of your customers think, not just your family and friends. I feel that if I hadn’t said anything I would have wasted my $9.00 dollars (actually $18.00 because I dragged my wife into it).
Fun show. Better every day. More audience, more energy, more enjoyment. Plus, I love to see my son perform. Oops, is this a give-away. But, the show is a lot of fun!!
Wow!!! What a performance, couldn’t stop laughing. These kids bring you into thier world with music and fun. It’s a must see performance. Check it out!!!
These kids are just great! Loved their rendition of the Mortal Kombat! Don’t miss this one!
Wow, these kids are fun! If you’ve ever played (or known someone who has played) Legend of Zelda, watched or played Pokemon, or know who Charlie the Unicorn is, you’ll get even more out of this show. People say “do what you know”, and that’s what these young people have done, putting together a quick show with energy and laughs. See it and have a good time!
Delightful show! Fun, funny, energetic. They sing well, move well, and do some zany and hilarious things.
Lots of energy. Very fun. Go see it.
I’ve seen these kids rehearsing, and they’re looking and sounding great! It looks like it’s gonna be a fun show.
