Saw Tanjora with their special guest Andalee and her Eastern Sun Dance Company. This show was very enjoyable and it should be one of the "MUST SEE" performances! Costuming was fantastic! The black with gold and silver just goes so well together. And the blues that Andalee's company was wearing was so bright and a nice contrast to Tanjora's wardrobe. Very pleasing to the eye. Wonderful choreography and the show flowed well. I hope many will take the time to see this show before Rogue is over. Highly recommended! Great performance ladies!

Tanjora trivia: Our "Swords of Sekhmet" dance is inspired by an ancient Egyptian myth in which Ra was no longer respected by the people and they ceased to obey his authority. The myth states that Ra communicated through Hathor's third Eye (Maat) and told her that some people in the land were planning to assassinate him. Hathor was so angry that the people she had created would be audacious enough to plan that, that she became Sekhmet (war goddess of Upper Egypt) to destroy them. Hathor (as Sekhmet) became bloodthirsty and the slaughter was great because she could not be stopped. As the slaughter continued, Ra saw the chaos down below and decided to stop the blood-thirsty Sekhmet. So he poured huge quantities of blood-coloured beer on the ground to trick Sekhmet. She drank so much of it—thinking it to be blood—that she became drunk and returned to her former gentle self as Hathor.

Tanjora trivia: The Trance dance in the Hathor show is an interpretive fusion of Shikkat, Guedra, and Zar trance dances of North Africa, all to a rockin' version of Hayati Inta sung by the amazing Natacha Atlas!

Saw Hathor Rising on Sunday night. Loved it! The Drum Solo Duet between Lydia and Andalee was so much fun to watch. I also loved The Swords of Sekhmet, the trance dance, and the veil dance (loved the costumes, I'm a sucker for the glam). Another fabulous dance was the snake dance. If you can fit this into your schedule, I would highly suggest going to see them!

I saw Hathor Rising at Severance on Saturday night and it was dazzling and energetic. Combining the talents of two Bellydance troupes provided strength in numbers as well as singular finesse through the many different kinds of dances portrayed. Each element was distinct, but contributed to the whole which was affirming and joyful to see. The obvious winner of a mock competition between teachers Lydia and Andalee was the audience, which clearly delighted in their skills and playful efforts to outdo each other. It is readily apparent that each knows what she brings to Tribal Fusion, and their dancers beautifully match this passion and shine as they perform. Tanjora and The Eastern Sun Dance Company were a visual pleasure, weaving both ancient ritual and modern interpretation into a seamless program that impressed and inspired. Don't miss the opportunity to see two incredible Fusion Bellydance troupes for the price of one!

Hathor is an Ancient Egyptian goddess who personified the principles of love, motherhood and joy, and was worshiped by royalty and common people alike.
In tomb paintings she is depicted as “Mistress of the West”, welcoming the dead into the next life, as well as a goddess of music, dance, foreign lands and fertility.

Hathor was revered by women who aspired to embody her multifaceted role as wife, mother, and lover.
Tanjora explores all these elements with their unique style of Fusion Bellydance, along with guest artists the Eastern Sun Dance Company!

Tanjora is directed by Lydia Fortner, the bellydance instructor at California Arts Academy. The troupe is made up of advanced bellydance students as well as professional bellydancers, some of whom can be seen performing at “Noah’s Middle Eastern Grill” in North Fresno.

Tanjora presents an exciting style of modern Bellydance which blends traditional Egyptian and American bellydance with the aesthetic of Tribal Style bellydance, a form that developed in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1960’s and is still evolving today.
This is Tanjora's 9th Rogue Festival show!

The Eastern Sun Dance Company was founded in 2008 and is comprised of
dancers from all over the South Valley who are dedicated to this art form
and each other. The Company is Artistically Directed by Andalee, an award
winning performer who in Februaury earned the title "Top Belly Dancer" after winning the popular web series "Project Belly Dance".
The troupe presents a range of traditional bellydance styles from folk to Classical Egyptian.
