From the performer of “Pentecostal Wisconsin,” last year’s sell out Rogue hit, comes “Ryan Paulson: I’m Uncomfortable.” Born Pentecostal in Wisconsin, Ryan tells the hilarious story of the very uncomfortable life he found himself living once he moved to New York City. Part stand-up, part storytelling, part musical theatre, it features stories such as, “How I Practiced Self-Love for My Convictions” and songs like “There’s No Condom for the

Heart.”

Ahhhh….he’s back, and my face hurts. Ryan is a great combination of humorist, satirist, story-teller, and improvization hero. He makes every telling of his work feel like it’s the first time he’s told his stories and we’re just sitting together over a beer (a Wisconsin brew, natch).

For those who saw “Pentacostal Wisconsin,” be prepared for a quite different show, albeit just as funny. It’s weird to see the penultimate altar boy cussing and making us as uncomfortable as he felt when he was experiencing these stories of his life and coming to age.

He had me at his first song (if you’ve not seen his show, it’s a great amalgam of song, story, stand-up, and touching poignancy…and projections). I laughed so hard, tho I had just woken up. The person I was sitting with, as we left the theatre, said “For me, this is the hit of the Rogue this year!” I agreed.*

A great performer, and a fantastic example of what fringe festival shows should be. Not to be missed.

*until we both saw “The Honeymoon Period Is Officially Over” - check my review of that show.

A hilarious and entertaining show! As funny as any HBO stand up. Good timing and delivery. The myspace submissions he received were priceless as well as frightening. A MUST SEE!!!

dare i say this show is devilishly funny and irreverent? well, i just did. really, the show is definitely funny, especially if you have any religious experience in your background. ryan’s reflections on life are witty, and he is a tremendous storyteller and song-crafter. witty, and even worth seeing twice if your friends didn’t go the first time.

one more thing, this show is rated pg-13. it has adult language. i didn’t mind, but let’s say that i was a bit uncomfortable at points because there had been like a 9 year old girl in line in front of me. i’m not sure what’s discussed in her home, but i’d say that you probably don’t want to bring little kids along.

I did not think it possible, but Ryan was even funnier than last year! Ryan, thank you for letting us be uncomfortable with you.:>) Last but not least, thank you for that touching(sure to be a classic) love song, ‘No condom for the heart’.:>o

  6. Karl Says:

This show is absolutely hilarious! Ryan’s timing is absolutely PERFECT. MUST SEE!

  7. Joyce Says:

My face hurts from laughing! Being of Scandanavian Evangelical exctraction myself, I identified with almost all of his issues, such as the draft horse thighs, and missionary zeal, and no sex til marriage. Wonderful wit and performance talent! Keep it up, Ryan! Thanks!

One of, if not THE best show I’ve seen at Rogue 2009.
Very professional, well written, and well performed. Even better than last year’s show.
A hilarious combination of stand up comedy, songs, and visuals.
Truth is indeed stranger than fiction.
If you are reserved about sex or religion, this show may not be for you,
but then again, hearing a virginal Pentecostal kid, being very uncomfortable about
eating taco and biscotti at the same time, just might be the thing that loosens you up.
This show had an entire, very diverse audience rolling with laughter
and there’s some wry messages to boot.

You’d think that any performer who wears a cheese head would be pedestrian at best. But Ryan comes across as trustworthy and genuine (and he doesn’t actually wear the cheese head during the performance). I’m glad it’s dark in Starline because I did blush a couple of times what with feeling… uncomfortable… but these uncomfortable moments are delivered with comforting innocence and great humor. The songs are really great (you’ll be singing about prophylactics and rafts for days). Fans of last year’s Pentecostal Wisconsin will love this show with it’s familiar personality and new story.

Hilarious, irreverent, revealing, fun. A 90-year-old woman next to me was laughing as hard as I was!

  11. Jennifer Says:

I felt more comfortable with the sex jokes than I did with him constantly suggesting that Christians are morons who don’t believe in logic or science…

I took friends to see it and enjoyed it just as much as the first time! Ryan’s and Barry Smith’s shows were the highlights of this years Rogue!

  14. Lisa Says:

I was laughing so hard I was crying, and my boyfriend said he hadn’t laughed that hard in a long time. This was definitely the highlight of the Rogue Festival for me this year. Definitely not something to bring young children to, as it gets kind of dirty at times, but Ryan Paulson is very fun and believable, and his songs are just brilliant.

  15. Helen Acosta Says:

As a former full-gospel pentecostal I have to say this show was hysterical and thought-provoking. Additionally, Paulson articulated a faith held by so many spiritual progressives: Their is room in God’s raft for everyone…
