Whew, I finally found this site so I could write a review.
The first piece you see in this series of Fresno favorite locations is the Water Tower, and it almost turned me off to the display. I quickly dismissed it as poorly drawn and non-proportioned, and with a weird knothole like thing in the middle.
Then I looked at the Tower Theatre painting, and thought ‘eh, he’s just drawing stuff he likes, kinda poorly.’
Then I aaw the picture you see above (actually shellacked, it turns out), and I was intrigued. I took more time with his art, and really started to like it. It’s supposed to be sortof refracted, a vision of Fresno artifacts through glassy gray eyes. The Water Tower knothole began to make me think, and the swirls of cloudy payne’s gray put me into a mood, a complex mood, both of darkness and of light. I, too, like these Fresno icons, and where I was at first put off, I grew to a point where I really couldn’t stop thinking about the mood and use of paint strokes and color in each picture.
The one above is my favorite of the series. I would say you should see this series of art, and insist that you take time with it. I almost didn’t and nearly passed it off as shlock…which would have been a big mistake on my part and a huge detriment to the clear thought and passion that did go into these works.

stephen,
thanks for the review and criticism. i know we’ve met, and it’s probably a poor title to call the ‘meet the artists’ that. it’s more appropriate to say, ‘hear the artists talk about their work and ask questions.’ i know that having heard the other artists i’m showing talk in this venue has really helped me dig deeper into their work, and have a greater understanding and appreciation of their motivation & work. so, maybe you (or others) will be able to check out the next meet the artist on friday @ 6:15
btw, i hate the picture above. i submitted it, and took it, so it’s my fault. it’s pretty difficult to photograph that particular painting due to the polyurethane coating.

Ha! I agree with the artist—this photo doesn’t do the painting justice. In person, it is a vibrant and glowing thing.
I had the pleasure (being the cheapskate I am) to get the ‘meet the artist’ bit for free via an Arthop stop at Ashtree Studios. Artist Ed Stewart graciously answered questions about his work and gave some insight into his interest in exploring techniques and materials [great scott man! be careful if you plan on applying more (literal)fire to your paints!] and talked a bit about how/why he chose some of those Fresno icons to paint. Interesting stuff. Cool art all over dem walls.
Artist Aileen Imperatrice[I hope my spelling is at least close] and her fanciful flight into some pop art is also very charming and fun—-’a boy and his dog’ –(would that be called a ‘pop abstract’?] I really liked that one.
