Winner of the Woodward Shakespeare Festival’s 2007 New Playwright Competition, “All’s Red that’s Riding Hood” by Terrance McArthur is a fractured fairy tale with a dark twist. Red Riding Hood heads for grandma’s house along her customary path. This day, however, she finds an unexpected companion in the exiled DeWolf. A series of misunderstandings ensue leading to a tragic end. Spoken all in blank verse, the story unfolds amid a gothic backdrop of good intentions gone wrong. Local playwright Terrance V. Mc Arthur both delights and startles audiences with his whimsical, thoughtful piece. Directed by Heather Parish.

I was surprised at how fully Shakespearean was what Terrance McArthur wrote. His meter, pace, interactional style, word choice–with a couple modern exceptions–and finally plot, ending with a stage littered with corpses are as Shakespearean as one can get. I wonder if the other entries in the Woodward Festival playwrighting competition were also such complete tributes to the Bard.
