A very pleasant surprise!!!
I didn’t know what to expect, and the dancers were quite nervous before unleashing this new fusion project on an actual audience, but it works.
It takes a little bit from Tanjora and a little from Ananka and a little bit from the unique personalities and combines them in a very fun way.
Mahzjai has learned (unlike some other companies) that we’re living in an MTV quick-quick world, and so when they bring out a bellydance theme or classic dance (candles, sword balancing), they do their moves, impress you, and then move on!
The classic trade-off semi-circle is set up like a hip-hop dance-off. One of the dancers takes Bette Midler’s swinging balls act and adds her own twists, making the balls glow-in-the-dark.
Drums and didgeridoo are part of the fusion, making this show tight and well-edited (tough to say for sooooo many other shows!).
Finally, I love that these are vibrant, talented, sexy women dancers with all varieties of body types. Nothing stops them from the graceful hand movements and sexy body isolations common to bellydance, and I think everyone will really enjoy this show!
