WINNER - OUTSTANDING SOLO SHOW - 2005 New York International Fringe Festival. The true story of a surreal journey into the depths of a bizarre religious cult. Barry Smith, then a disillusioned dishwasher in Aspen, believes his sophistication, wisdom and hallucinogenic drug use have helped him to overcome his Southern fundamentalist upbringing … until he discovers Jesus has returned and is living in Montana! Incorporating home movies, photos and graphics, this tale examines the humorous side of everyday cult life.

If you’re thinking about seeing this, go for it! Charmingly random, comically overwhelming at times, and surprisingly funny for the subject matter. There are some wonderful multi-media moments.

This show is going to make you laugh. You will probably laugh out loud, louder than you might usually in public. But don’t expect it to make you come away with some new insight into the inner workings of religion, cults, or the questions that have plagued humankind. I think the funniest thing (not really the funnies thing, but funny to me) was seeing a camera man from one of the news stations film about five minutes of the show and then leaving knowing that he wasn't going to be able to use any of the footage, which is to say that there is a fair share of profanity, blasphemy and lewd storytelling. This one is worth seeing, though not at the top of my list.

A great blend of comedy and visual media. An irreverent routine that will make you laugh, and possibly offend. I recommend this show.
What I didn’t like concerns the venue itself. There was an underlying odor of chlorine wafting from the restrooms that was a distraction (hopefully cleaned up by now) and the chairs were uncomfortable. Sit at a table if you get there early enough.
Fast-paced and hilarious! I loved the visual presentations, even learned some new Beatles trivia when it came to the Paul is Dead rumors. The show illustrates so humorously how faith and fears prey on the impressionable mind. It helps to validate for me that all religions are based on collective superstition that's agreed upon! A unique and clever show! Highly entertaining! Go see it!!!
yeah, fun show...I hoped for even more power-point, where the ironic humor flowed.
Frankly, this show isn't my favorite, but it is well-played and well constructed, so go see it!
I went to see this show on its Sunday morning set, so I think it qualifies as the required religious experience . . . Anyway, it was a lot of fun and laughs, great multimedia experience, I recommend to everyone!
BTW Bryan does a great job of promoting his show. He came by my venue, told us a little bit and I was hooked! Oh, oh had I been brainwashed?
Coming for a religious upbringing I felt I had an inside track with Barry in his ordeals. A laugh out loud show that surprises and satisfies even the stressed out palate. :-) Definitely a must-see for Rogue 2007.
Hmmm... what can we do to bribe him to come back for Rogue 2008?? ;-)
Jesus in Montana ties with Tale End for my pick of the Best of the Rogue this year. Jesus in Montana is hilariously funny, fast-paced and deeply sympathetic. Barry Smith treats the truly strange beliefs of his younger self and his fellow cultists with humor but never with condescension. Smith's sophisticated multimedia presentation brings an entertaining new dimension to his show but never distracts from his storytelling or his engaging performance. Anyone who thinks he has a handle on absolute truth, religious or secular, needs to see Jesus in Montana for an immediate deprogramming.
Great fun, fascinating, well delivered with good visuals; I liked the iconoclasm.
I really loved this show: a fascinating and compelling story, sharp, vivid writing, a very well constructed script, solid direction, and perfect delivery, along with excellent design and placement of the powerpoint elements. Absolutely wonderful.
